Effective management systems and independent certification are key drivers of a successful food safety culture. FSSC 22000 is designed to encourage the international harmonisation and transparency of food safety standards. Your whole network of processes will be assessed and monitored using the process-based approach – the systematic identification and management of interacting processes.
Applicable to all food products, food ingredients, food packaging materials, animal feed and animal food production, this certification scheme is based on ISO 22000, the international food safety management system standard, combined with one of the sector specific technical specifications for Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs) (e.g. ISO/TS 22001-1 for food manufacturing) and additional sector-specific requirements that ensure consistency and integrity across all the scopes and provide governance for the scheme.
The latest version (4.1) of this standard is aligned with the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements version 7.1, which were published in May 2017 and incorporates industry feedback on version 4, which was launched in December 2016.
The new version also aims to make the standard more rigorous and consistent, primarily through the introduction of unannounced audits and a new focus on food defence and fraud prevention.
The scope has been extended to cover:
- Transport and Storage – based on NEN NTA 8059:2016
- Food service/Catering – based on ISO/TS 22002-2:2016
- Retail/Wholesale industries – based on ISO/TS 22002-6:2013
This is in addition to the previous scopes of farming of animals, manufacturing of food products, manufacturing of food packaging and packaging material, and the manufacturing of food and feed for animals.
What we offer
We specialise in management systems compliance including gap analysis, assessment and certification, all underpinned with expert advice designed to meet the needs of your industry. We explore every problem thoroughly with exact, analytical precision. We leave no stone unturned and no questions unanswered, to draw accurate conclusions.
Food safety management system gap analysis
You have the option to conduct a gap analysis before certification, during which an assessor will work with you to focus on a critical, high risk or weak area of your system. We will work with you to determine the scope of your gap analysis to give you the flexibility to focus on the most important areas for your organisation.
Once successful assessments are carried out and technical approval given, we award you a certificate. Certification provides credibility for your stakeholders through the globally recognised Lloyd's Register (LR) brand.
Within FSSC 22000 version 4.1, it is mandatory for at least one of the two surveillance audits to be an unannounced audit. The certification body determines which of the surveillance audits will be unannounced, although certified organisations can choose to have both surveillance audits unannounced, if they wish. The unannounced audit can take place at any time during operational working hours and will start with an inspection of the production facilities and the auditor will spend at least half of their time in the production area assessing the implementation of the applicable CCPs, PRPs and OPRPs.
