Horizons March 2020

Connecting tomorrow’s thinking to the challenges of today.

Horizons March 2020

None of us expected 2020 to start with such a test. As we navigate this global pandemic, Marine and Offshore Director Nick Brown reflects on some of the challenges being faced and how LR is working to support its clients during the Coronavirus crisis.

Also in this issue, MISC President and Group CEO, Yee Yang Chien, shares his company’s vision on decarbonisation and ICS President, Esben Poulsson, talks about the need for R&D funding for zero-carbon advancement. We take a look at the maritime industry’s early response to the IMO 2020 switchover and you can find out what drives Elina Papageorgiou, LR’s new Marine and Offshore President for UK and Ireland.

We take a deep-dive into the offshore industry, its carbon footprint and how remote technology is changing risk-based inspection and we look at how LR supported two significant new construction projects – the world’s largest heavy-lift crane vessel, Sleipnir, and HMS Prince of Wales, the UK’s Royal Navy’s newest aircraft carrier.

Work on the March issue Horizons started in early January, weeks before the world started witnessing the fallout from Covid-19 and we have endeavoured to ensure all the content is as timely as possible despite this rapidly evolving situation.

Horizons brings together LR’s insight into current trends and hot topics in the maritime and offshore sectors alongside expert views from our people on regulation, safety and innovation. You can also read a round-up of the latest developments at LR from our teams around the globe.

With Marintec 2019 taking place in Shanghai this week, LR is celebrating its 150-year anniversary in China. Since we sent our first surveyor to Shanghai in 1869, we have supported China’s huge transformation to the global powerhouse it is today. Horizons takes a look back at the momentous milestones achieved over the years.

You can also read thoughts from Matthew Williams about the regulatory developments needed to deliver IMO’s carbon intensity ambition for 2030 and lay the foundations for decarbonisation in shipping. Additionally, James Forsdyke examines how risk mitigation in shipping is changing and LR’s journey to remote presence.

Maritime safety is another key focus in this issue with M&O Director Nick Brown discussing the impact of technology on crew welfare and mental health. James Pomeroy also evaluates the factors that contribute to casualties in confined spaces and what could be done differently to protect crew.

Horizons brings together LR’s insight into current trends and hot topics in the maritime sector alongside expert views from our people on regulation, technology and innovation.
