An ISO 50001 EnMS helps you to develop a systematic approach to continually improve your energy performance – including procurement, processes and usage. Reducing your energy consumption will not only reduce your costs, but will also reduce your carbon footprint and help protect the natural environment. It also reduces your reliance on others to provide the energy you need to operate, hence reducing the risk to your organisation.
Although energy is included as an aspect in the majority of organisations’ ISO 14001 environmental management systems, no particular emphasis is shown to energy and it is often overlooked with organisations concentrating on the more obvious environmental aspects, such as chemical and waste management. ISO 50001 has been designed solely for the management of energy and includes a number of requirements not covered by ISO 14001.
The International Organization for Standardization is currently reviewing ISO 50001. The Draft International Standard ISO/DIS 50001:2017 was published in November 2017. The most important change is expected to be the introduction of the High Level Structure, Annex SL, which is shared by all new and revised international standards, which will make integration easier at an organisational level. It is also anticipated that the new version will make the key concepts more relevant for SMEs as well as reflecting developments in the energy sector since the last publication in 2011. Publication of the revised version of ISO 50001 is expected in 2018.

What are the benefits?
Reduce energy costs, demonstrate compliance and boost your brand reputation
Implementing an energy management system certified to ISO 50001, helps you to reduce your energy consumption through a structured approach to monitoring your energy uses, identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency and consumption and then implementing action plans to improve your energy performance.
Certification to ISO 50001 demonstrates your commitment to improving your energy performance and minimising your impact on the environment, to ensure ongoing effectiveness and continual improvements, as well as compliance to local energy legislation.
Although organisations generally recognise that energy is a significant cost and an area where improvements can be made, it is often neglected during the purchasing and design decisions and opportunities for ongoing energy efficiency improvements and financial savings are often missed. ISO 50001 specifically highlights these areas, so your energy management system will ensure that these opportunities are investigated and improvement potential identified and realised.
The Annex SL High Level Structure used by ISO in its new and revised standards makes it far simpler for management system controls to be integrated into a single ‘business management system’, which can further help to reduce duplication in cost and effort.
