The Maritime Fuel Supply Dialogues, an initiative of the Lloyd’s Register (LR) Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, aims to unlock the potential for clean and sustainable maritime fuels through dialogue and collaboration amongst energy and transport ministries across Asia Pacific and Africa. The Hub is a joint initiative between Lloyd’s Register and Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
The 1st roundtable during Singapore Maritime Week in April 2024, hosted by the Ocean Stewardship Coalition of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in partnership with LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, participanting ministries discussed potential parthways to drive regional green hydrogen fuel supply development at scale in Africa to support maritime decarbonisation across the Indian and Pacific Ocean.
Recognising the value of open exchange, the participating ministries committed to further communication and collaboration through future dialogues through a joint statement.
At the 2nd roundtable, which took place during the Global Africa Hydrogen Summit 2024 in Windhoek Namibia, participants took the opportunity to build upon the collective commitment by the participants outlined in the first roundtable, brainstorming on levers and policies that can drive collective action towards enabling investment decisions and mobilising finance for the development of clean fuel supply infrastructure in the two regions. A readout was produced to summarise the discussion points raised to support knowledge-sharing and accelerate actions from the public and private sectors that will leverage opportunities in Africa to stimulate supply of clean fuels to Asia-Pacific’s maritime hubs.
Looking ahead to COP29, the Maritime Fuel Supply Dialogues looks to hold its next roundtable in-person to drive forward solutions around the discussion takeaways and explore other mechanisms to support regional green hydrogen developments.
