BP Shipping celebrates its centenary.

BP Shipping (BPS) – the oldest continually operating heritage company in the BP Group – celebrates its 100-year anniversary this year.

Founded on 30 April 1915 to carry products for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, it has been an industry pioneer in tanker expertise since then.

Apart from a series of global birthday celebrations, BPS has marked the event with a book entitled Riding the waves in which a team of writers, historians and former BP Shipping employees have charted the history of the company and its key players over the past 100 years.

Lloyd’s Register ’s relationship with BPS began in 1916 – exactly 99 years ago – when we were asked to class the British Emperor, the first of a fleet of seven tankers for the tanker company. Since then we’ve continued to approve and class BPS vessels and to collaborate on important projects including the introduction of double-hulled tankers and more recently work on four giant LNG carriers.

BPS has also marked its centenary with a change of CEO. John Ridgway who has led the company since 2008 recently handed over to his successor Susan Dio.British_Emerald
