Lloyd's Register Energy is nominated as one of the prestigious ONS Innovation Award nominees for 2014, at the ONS Conference and Exhibition in Stavanger, Norway.
'Best' in class rankings reflect the breadth of Lloyd’s Register Energy’s drive to continually help improve safety and operational performance in offshore drilling.
The world's leading authority on safety and risk management was nominated because of its focus on sensor applications in tension risers, resulting in safer and better performing deep-water drilling.

Marine Riser Tensioner Systems (MRTs) are a major component of off-shore drilling platforms. The function of a MRT is to maintain an upward tension on the riser while making adjustments for the movements of the drilling platform. As the drilling platform moves up and down with the waves, the riser tensioner system compensates for this movement so that the riser pipe does not buckle with downward movement or pull apart with upward movement.
"Failures in MRTs can result in costly downtime and lost production," highlighted Reeve. "Traditional monitoring systems are often unable to detect wide variations in total system load that can be indicative of trouble ahead."
"This solution contributes to a better understanding of current operations, improved foresight, and a higher level of confidence in offshore operations," said Reeve.
This latest nomination follows a series of industry accolades Lloyd's Register Energy has received recently for its work in other offshore drilling innovations including risk modelling of blow-out preventers which won the Supply Chain Excellence Award from the Energy Industries Council and also Hart's E&P 2014 Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation.
