Ruth is a Client Services Team Lead, currently based in Melbourne. She helps to plan and schedule audits for our clients and overlooks the Australia operation. Her team is based in Malaysia because Kuala Lumpur is one of the planning hubs. She joined LR in July 2017.
Why did you join?
I joined as a temp initially, I had just come back from New Zealand and wasn’t sure if I would stay in Malaysia. I came to LR and they had a 5 month contractual role. They needed people to help augment a new system and migrate the data from the old system into the new one. I really thought my role would just be for 5 months and then I would be gone from LR. One month in, the Australia operations had a big change and I was asked to support. I started as a client services executive and then as the whole team of four left, I was the only oe left in the team. I was back in Malaysia at the time but the whole team had been based in Melbourne. It was really challenging but really interesting too.
Why did you stay?
As a person I continously seek improvement. Throughout my role timing has been on my side because I have been in the right place at the right time for opportunites that have arisen. The whole team leaving presented as an opportunity for me to step up and lead the team, and I was promoted to my current role to step up and lead. I always want to grow and am open to opportunities, and LR has been a place of opportunity for me so far.
Describe a typical day at LR?
Emailing, answering phone calls and providing advice to our clients takes up a lot of my usual day. I always tell my team we have to take pride in what we do because our clients bank on our knowledge for certification and accreditation, and they come to us for advice. We have to know our stuff really well so we can help them make the right decisions. It all depends on the service we provide them.
What is your proudest moment at LR?
When my whole team left it was really hard and at times I couldn’t believe I was still there. I was the only person doing the job of 5 or 6 people. I had help from different managers in different offices, I surprised myself at how resilient I was during those tough moments. The way I see it is that as long as you are still learning in your role, as long as you are not stuck or in a plateau then there is always room to grow. The thing about our job is that every day we do the same thing – and when a new enquiry comes in you can still learn, if you open to learning. Being promoted and relocating from Malaysia to Melbourne has also been a really proud moment. Moving from one country to another can be really stressful and I would credit myself for being able to move so smoothly.
