TRAINING

Electrical: rig electrician course.

Overview

The introductory level Rig electrician course (REC) forms part of the tri-level Lloyd's Register educational curriculum (introductory, intermediate and advanced) and is specifically aimed at the drilling industry. The REC provides a solid basis for candidates hoping to become a rig electrician.

This Internation Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) accredited course is designed for those who have recently entered the industry or are actively seeking employment on a drilling rig.

You will learn to

  • Identify fundamental components of drilling units

  • Identify major items which have an impact on the safety and operation of a rig

  • Perform a range of planned maintenance tasks

  • Explain the function, from a safety perspective and at an elementary level, of electrical equipment such as AC/DC motors, generators, SCR systems, etc.

  • Explain the implication of hazardous area classification and EX codes on electrical equipment

  • Recognise deficiencies on EX electrical equipment

  • Explain the working of eddy current brake (Elmagco brake)

Course content

The REC provides an insight into the most common deficiencies found on drilling units. The course contains detailed examples of major items of drilling equipment, such as the drawworks, top drive, mud pumps, derrick, mud systems, marine cranes, engines, electrical equipment, safety equipment and pollution control standards.

The Rig Elecrical Course presents fundamental industry standards and generic maintenance procedures, explains the requirements of a maintenance system and introduces basic maintenance reporting standards.

The course is based on interactive classes with ample time for group participation and discussion.

To ensure clarity and maximum effectiveness of the course:

  • Photographs of defective equipment from our technical inspection database are used to illustrate specific deficiencies

  • Videos are shown to explain operational and maintenance procedures

  • The course ends with a final exam
