Materials, Welding and NDE-The Basics.

This one day course will provide you with some very useful practical skills to make you more confident in your approach to common materials, welding techniques and testing procedures used in the marine industry.

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at superintendent engineers and other marine staff who are faced with understanding what welding methodologies can be applied and the impact their repair choice has on the longevity and robustness of repairs carried out.

Key content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Properties of marine materials such as: rolled steel products, copper alloys, aluminium alloys, stainless steels, castings, forgings, composites

  • Welding processes - SMAW - GMAW - FCAW - GTAW - SAW

  • Pre and post weld techniques such as heat treatment

  • What is a weld procedure?

  • Various NDE processes

  • Mechanical testing procedures

  • Case studies of common repairs

What will you learn?

  • Appreciate the basic metallurgical properties of the more commonly used materials in the marine industry
  • Explain which materials are chosen with relation to their specific properties for a variety of applications in the marine industry
  • Specify the Lloyds Register requirements for normal strength steel
  • Evaluate the use of ‘joint technologies’ especially weld technologies used in the shipbuilding and repair process
  • Recognise the most common testing and examination technologies used in the marine industry
