Technical training for oil and gas.

Since 2010 LR have delivered more than 350 technical training courses to almost 90 clients worldwide, including, Saudi Aramco, Statoil, Repsol, Cairn and Maersk.

Overview

LR technical training courses are delivered by industry experts, who typically have at least 20 years’ practical experience in their discipline focus areas. We have close collaborations with universities, where staff work part-time as visiting lecturers. We also have long-term relationships with the SPE and SPWLA and commit significantly to global lecturing programmes.  

As well as LR’s public courses all training programmes can be customised to your requirements and delivered in house, which gives you the opportunity to tailor the content and timing of the course, as well as incorporating any commercially sensitive scenarios or data that may be required. They can also time the delivery of these courses to complement your own project timescales, as well as configure the duration to optimise the balance between the time you have available and your learning priorities.

Introductory courses

Technical: Introduction to the geological storage of CO2

This course provides an introduction to the principles and practicalities of CO2 storage in subsurface geological formations. There is no assumption of previous knowledge in any technical discipline.

  • Technical: Managing sand production

    This interactive course promotes a holistic approach and explains current best practice in sand prediction and control. Combining case histories, demonstrations, videos and practical exercises, the course provides the necessary skills to assess the risks and implications of sand production and so develop strategies for sand management.

  • Technical: Understanding well productivity

    The objective of this course is to review how reservoir and well performance and skin are handled in various nodal analysis calculations and in turn how these are affected by various completion and well intervention methods.

Intermediate courses

Technical: Core analysis - Best practice

This industry-leading, fully independent training course will provide participants with a solid grounding in the acquisition, evaluation and implementation of routine core analysis (RCA) and special core analysis (SCAL) data. On completion, the participants will be able to design core analysis programmes, recognise and correct questionable data, and will be better placed to appreciate the importance of quality core analysis in integrated studies.

  • Technical: Deterministic petrophysics

    In this course emphasis will be placed on the integration of all available data, understanding the context in which the data are acquired and selection of appropriate methods and parameters. Common pitfalls encountered in the interpretation process, and their consequences, will be identified. Interpretation exercises are an important element of the course.

  • Technical: Formation damage

    This independent course provides participants with a unique insight into formation damage through the practical integration of regional, core, well and drilling data. Theory and principles are reinforced by the extensive use of real field examples from throughout the world.

  • Technical: Geomechanics - Sand production and wellbore stability

    This course explains how geomechanics can help in assessing the risk of sand production and wellbore instability, through the practical integration of regional, core, well and drilling data from fields throughout the world.

Advanced courses

MSc Petrophysics and formation evaluation

This prestigious programme has been developed by Lloyd's Register and the University of Aberdeen to help address the recognised shortage of skilled petrophysicists in the energy industry. The objective of the MSc is to produce practitioners for the future and is aimed at people already working in a scientific, mathematic or engineering environment, who wish to progress into a petrophysics role.

  • Technical: Advanced drilling techniques

    The course explains how advanced drilling techniques can help overcome drilling issues and maximise potential economic returns in depleted and brown fields. Participants will gain a unique insight into these techniques through the practical integration of theory and actual drilling data, reinforced by the extensive use of real case studies from throughout the world.

  • Technical: Advanced petrophysics

    This independent course examines advanced options for petrophysical interpretation including mineral volume methodologies, shaly sand and thin bed techniques. Participants will learn how to organise data, plan and report petrophysical studies, as well as looking at the integration of log and core datasets across multiple wells.
