EXMAR pioneer innovative solution to address increasingly stringent emission restrictions
EXMAR has announced two new very large gas carriers (VLGCs) that will use LPG as their main engine fuel, to be built to LR class by Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Philippines. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2020.
The vessels will be used to serve EXMAR's long-term commitments with Statoil ASA of Norway for worldwide LPG transportation announced in December last year. This development is the result of Statoil ASA’s commitment to improve the sustainability performance in its activities and a longstanding co-operation from EXMAR, with LR as the classification society, and MAN Diesel & Turbo as Engine Maker to develop an efficient LPG fuel system, which allows part of the cargo to be used for the vessels’ propulsion.
LPG as a fuel does not contain any sulphur and substantially reduces CO2 and NOx emissions and particulate matters are almost halved when compared to a heavy fuel engine.
EXMAR’s expertise and proven track record in LNG and LPG handling enables it to play a pioneering role in the gas shipping industry as this project will be the first to validate LPG as marine fuel.
