Client challenge
Ship operator NORDEN asked us to evaluate the suitability of several ballast water treatment systems. These had been pre-selected for our client’s fleet of new build bulk carriers and product tankers. This was a key investment for NORDEN. The company needed assurance that any system it invested in would present the least risk, not just regarding compliance, but also in terms of cost and future suitability.
How we helped
With clear insight on our client’s challenges and opportunities, we added our:
- relevant regulatory knowledge
- expertise in treatment technologies
- understanding of the key differences between the systems being considered.
Having collated detailed data from each manufacturer, we ranked each system against key criteria. The results helped NORDEN make the decision that was right for their future fleet, including being prepared for regulatory changes.
Powerful results
The system ranking enabled NORDEN to make an informed decision when selecting their preferred treatment system. This has helped the company to reduce risk and cost, with its new fleet prepared for entry into force of a new ballast water management convention.
Client feedback
“As a globally operating shipowner, NORDEN is increasingly facing complex legislation that impacts on our business. Ballast water treatment systems are one such example and the competence of Lloyd’s Register has greatly assisted our decision making.”
Lars Lundegaard
Senior Vice President, NORDEN
