Knowing more to transport gas with confidence.

Our applied technology experts in Halifax, Canada, were asked to undertake a risk assessment of a new client project. LNG and LPG ships would transit through environmentally sensitive waters in Australia and the US. Our client required a comprehensive study: a systematic hazard identification (HAZID) exercise of different failures of equipment, people and processes for these journeys. The rigorous examination needed to demonstrate that all credible scenarios and accidental events had been considered for project operations. 

In particular, grounding and collision resulting from accidental and intentional acts were identified as key hazards. Such incidents could lead to the release of cargoes with significant consequences.

We broke our study into four main tasks:

• identifying potential hazards 
• carrying out fire consequence analysis  
• estimating the frequency and likelihood of hazards, using historical data and expert judgement 
• assessing risk and developing strategies to mitigate risk.

Our work has helped safeguard the environment from the release of cargoes and the potentially significant consequences. It has also contributed to further industry understanding on carrying LNG and LPG.
