Client challenge

229-81332_Texelstroom_webTESO wanted to build a uniquely energy efficient ferry. The design would include an advanced energy management system, operating mainly on gas, but also with batteries, solar auxiliary power and the ability to run solely on diesel. The ferry operator asked us to help with this novel challenge, building on a 25-year client relationship.

How we helped

Our technical support and guidance enabled TESO to bring together leading technology, ensuring the design goals were successfully achieved.

Our input covered the ferry’s unique powering capability, as well as other key features for a vessel operating in the north European region. The ferry also required a strengthened hull to safely navigate icy waters and achieved our Passenger and Crew Accommodation Comfort (PCAC) classification notation, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for passengers and crew.

Project outcome

The new double-ended ferry will operate between the Dutch islands of Texel and Den Helder, carrying 1,750 passengers and 350 vehicles.

Client comment

“Safety and reliability are the most important goals to achieve. In addition to the long-standing good relationship between both sides, TESO has again chosen Lloyd’s Register to be their classification society."

Cees de Waal

Managing Director, TESO
