Statutory alert: Amendments to the 2014 Guidelines on the method of calculation of the attained energy efficiency design index (EEDI) for new ships, which concern the calculation method for the EEDI.

Applicability: All shipowners, operators, builders and designers
MEPC 70, held in October 2016, revised the 2014 Guidelines on the method of calculation of the attained EEDI for new ships. The amendment concerns the calculation method for the EEDI.
The amendment consists of two elements. These elements are aimed at making EEDI calculation more pragmatic.
1. Ships with dual fuel engines that use gas fuel as non-primary fuel
With regard to the calculation method for the EEDI of ships with dual fuel engines that use gas fuel as non-primary fuel, it was agreed that the weighted average of CF (the conversion factor between fuel consumption and the CO2 emission) and the specific fuel consumption (SFC) for the liquid and gas modes would be used, according to their availability ratio, in the calculation of the attained ship energy efficiency.
2. Cubic capacity correction factor for wood chip carriers
This is related to bulk carriers designed to transport lighter, less dense (ratio DWT/cubic capacity less than 0.55) cargoes. The discussion also included self-loading/unloading capabilities.
