Statutory alert: Concentrated inspection campaign on crew familiarisation for enclosed space entry.

15 August 2017

Applicability: All shipowners and ship managers

The Riyadh Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has announced a concentrated inspection campaign on crew familiarisation for enclosed space entry that will run from 1 September 2017 to 30 November 2017.

The purpose of the campaign is to ensure that ships have effective procedures and measures in place to safeguard seafarers when entering and working in enclosed spaces on board the ship and to check compliance with the applicable requirements of the SOLAS Convention. Consequently, as of 1 September 2017, all vessels may be subject to an additional check by Port State Control Officers (PSCOs).

PSCOs will use a questionnaire to establish that crew members are familiar with the relevant equipment and have received training to allow them to identify and understand the hazards associated with enclosed space entry.
