What is Biofuel (HVO)?

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a type of paraffinic diesel that is produced from various bio-based feedstocks, including plant oils, animal fats, and waste materials. Unlike FAME, HVO undergoes a refining process that involves hydrogen treatment, resulting in a high-quality fuel that is indistinguishable from petroleum gas oil in terms of its general characteristics and performance. This advanced biofuel can be used directly in diesel engines without any modifications and is therefore considered a drop-in fuel.

For HVO to be a net zero-emission fuel, the carbon released during combustion must be offset by the carbon absorbed during the growth of the resources used in the production. Feedstocks must be sustainably sourced for HVO to be a sustainable fuel option.
