Applicability: designers, shipbuilders and steel manufacturers.
Amendments have been made to Lloyd’s Register’s Rules to include the requirements of two newly published Unified Requirements from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) regarding marine forgings and castings.
The following IACS Unified Requirements come into force on 1 July 2023:
1. UR W7 Rev.4 – Hull and machinery steel forgings.
2. UR W8 Rev.3 – Hull and machinery steel castings.
To give manufacturers advance warning of these changes, Lloyd’s Register (LR) has included these revised requirements in the 1 January 2023 version of the Rules. However, compliance by manufacturers is not required until the IACS implementation date of 1 July 2023.
The impact on LR’s Rules (mainly contained within Lloyd’s Register’s Rules for the Manufacture, Testing and Certification of Materials) are summarised as follows:
a. Revisions to testing sample locations for forgings.
b. Introducing requirements for forged rings.
c. Requirements for Charpy impact testing for forgings.
d. Introduction of alloy steel castings.
e. Revisions to testing sample locations for castings.
f. Requirements for Charpy impact testing for castings.
g. Introduction of higher strength grades.
h. Revised requirements for repair of defective castings.
