Applicability: All owners and operators of Lloyd’s Register classed cargo ships

This Classification News is a reminder of the SOLAS cargo ship requirements for inspection of the outside of the ship’s bottom, contained in Chapter 1, Part B, Regulation 10.

The regulation states that there shall be:

“A minimum of two inspections of the outside of the ship’s bottom during the five-year period of validity of the Cargo Ship Safety Construction Certificate.”

and that:

“In all cases the interval between any two such inspections shall not exceed 36 months.”

Please be aware that no extension to this 36-month inspection interval can be solely agreed by Lloyd’s Register. A request for an extension of inspection interval of the outside of the ship’s bottom should initially be made to the applicable flag administration for agreement and specified requirements, before consideration by Lloyd’s Register.
