Applicability: ship builders.
The recently published document IACS UR W35: June 2019 - Requirements for NDT Suppliers sets out how firms providing NDE (Non-Destructive Evaluation) and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) services must use appropriate procedures and properly certified personnel.
Lloyd’s Register will explicitly state new requirements from 1 July 2020, to augment current LR Rules in accordance with UR W35.
This has necessitated some minor changes to LR Rules:
- LR Rules will now require NDE/NDT suppliers to have in their employ at least one NDE/NDT level III personnel. Level III certification must be obtained from an external certification body (i.e. not obtained from an ‘in-house’ certification scheme).
- Furthermore, it explicitly requires NDE/NDT suppliers to have documented quality management procedures and processes, and all necessary controls, in place to operate an effective NDE/NDT service.
Note: UR W35 does not apply to Thickness Measurement companies. For LR approved Thickness Measurement companies, current requirements of LR approval scheme MQPS 17-1, and IACS UR Z17 are still applicable.
