The increasing focus on the prevention of air pollution from ships and the reduction of GHG emissions is driving interest in alternative marine fuels, particularly low and zero carbon fuels such as methanol, LNG, ammonia and hydrogen. LR has updated its Guidance Notes for Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol Fuels to support industry’s ambitions and incorporating the latest rule and regulatory developments.
The Guidance Notes support those ships intending to use methanol or ethanol as fuel and where they are to be designed to meet LR’s classification requirements for methyl/ethyl alcohol fuels given under Appendix LR1 of LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships using Gases or Low-flashpoint Fuels. The Guidance Notes provide information for the design, arrangement, installation, and control and monitoring of machinery, equipment and systems using methyl/ethyl alcohol fuels and also includes information on some of the statutory implications to be considered for ships classed by LR and designed to use methyl/ethyl alcohol fuels.
