Carriage of Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) powered crafts and vehicles and their charging operation on board of yachts introduce hazards of fire and flammable and toxic gases release. LIB fires cannot be easily extinguished and impose a substantial hazard to the crew when fighting such a fire.

The design of yachts should include measures to prevent a Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) thermal runaway; if it nevertheless happens, the yacht’s design should include appropriate safeguarding instruments to minimise any harmful consequences. Appropriate operation of the yacht and training of the crew provide additional measures to mitigate the risk.

These Guidance Notes are addressed to yachts designers, builders, and Operators to provide risk-reduction measures and increase safety for the handling, charging and storage of lithium-ion battery (LIB)-powered crafts and vehicles carried on yachts.
