This Guidance Note provides comprehensive guidance on implementing the FIRE(C, RISK) notation under Part 6, Chapter 5 of LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships.

To support the approval process for container ships carrying high-risk cargoes (e.g. lithium batteries, e-scooters, refrigerated containers) by:

  • Minimising fire risks: To mitigate these new risks, container arrangements should be assessed, considering the goods and products carried on board the ships, through a robust risk-assessment as described in the LR ShipRight Procedure for Risk Based Certification (RBC).
  • Enhancing safety culture: To develop a strong safety culture for such container transportation, especially for unconventional cargoes, Lloyd’s Register is committed to sharing and using experiences developed in other R&D projects and studies for developing a robust compliance tool in a consistent manner for the different shipping sectors. Therefore, LR is interested in collecting your experiences and feedback. Kindly use the following contact (TechnicalExperts@lr.org), referring to this guidance.
  • Aligning with LR’s Risk Based Certification (RBC) process: The RBC process is an agile and flexible methodology tailored for assessing specific risks, addressing designs that deviate from prescription, covering aspects related to the design, operation and maintenance of a specific ship. It should be used to help demonstrate that the risks to, for example, persons can be accepted by LR and/or the regulator (e.g. National Administration).
