This document includes guidelines for the construction and operation of ships with wind assisted propulsion systems (hereinafter referred to as WAPS) installed. 

Definitions noted to support the use of the Guidance Notes 

WAPS: wind assisted propulsion system, referring to sails or other wind propulsion generating devices and systems which are not intended as the primary means of propulsion.

APS foundation: WAPS supporting structures (e.g. mast step, chain plates, winch foundations and  strong points) that are welded to the ship hull.

Hull support structure: deck plating and underdeck structures (including all local reinforcement and stiffening) beneath the WAPS foundation. It also includes any WAPS supporting structure that is carried through the main strength deck.
