The goal of this Rules is to provide requirements for the design, construction and installation of gas bunker transfer equipment and systems on board liquefied gas ships, , thereby minimizing the risk to the ship or barge (hereinafter referred to as ‘ship’), its crew and the environment, and having regard to the nature of the products including flammability, toxicity, asphyxiation, corrosivity, reactivity, temperature and pressure, as applicable.
The Rules apply to ships supplying liquefied gas as a fuel to other ships, and ships receiving carbon dioxide (CO₂) from other ships, as a part of carbon capture and storage operations.
Ships complying with the relevant liquefied gas bunker transfer equipment and systems requirements of this Rules will be eligible for assignment of the Liquefied gas bunker () notation. This notation is to be supplemented by one or more of the following associated characters, depending on the type of products and application:
a. Liquefied gas bunker (yy, V), where ‘yy’ identifies the type of products. With reference to ‘yy’, the following identifiers are used:
NG Natural gas
EG Ethane gas
PG Petroleum gas (considered to include pure propane or butane or any mixture of the two)
HY Hydrogen
AM Ammonia
CO2 Carbon dioxide
With reference to ‘V’, the following identifiers are used:
V Product pressure and temperature control and vapour management system installed for gas bunker operation with regard to handling vapour from receiving ship in accordance with an approved design and surveyed accordingly.
b. Liquefied gas bunker (yy), where ‘yy’ identifies the type of products, in cases where pressure and temperature control and vapour management system are not installed.
READY (Liquefied gas bunker ()) Ships complying with particular aspects of these Rules may be eligible for assignment of LR’s liquefied gas bunker transfer equipment and systems READY descriptive note, READY (Liquefied gas bunker (yy, z)), where ‘yy’ identifies the type of products and ‘z’ identifies the particular aspects which have been approved or approved and installed. This descriptive note may be assigned when aspects of design and construction are prepared for installation of liquefied gas bunker transfer equipment and systems.
