Today, 23 September 2019, Lloyd’s Register, is proud to announce that it has signed the United Nations Global Compact, Sustainable Ocean Principles, calling on companies around the world to commit to securing a healthy and productive ocean. By signing up to the principles, companies will commit to taking action to prevent pollution, manage their use of marine resources to ensure long-term sustainability and be transparent about their ocean-related activities and impacts.
Lloyd’s Register was a contributor to the development of the Sustainable Ocean Principles along with stakeholders from the private sector, NGOs, academic institutions and UN agencies. The Sustainable Ocean Principles will be formally launched at the meeting of the UN Global Compact Action Platform on Sustainable Ocean Business on Monday, 23 September alongside the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

Held at the UN Headquarters, New York, CEO Alastair Marsh took part in the UN Secretary General’s launch of the Climate Action Summit at UNHQ and also a panel discussion on how the Sustainable Ocean Principles can drive action, alongside Eldar Sætre, CEO Equinor, Patrick Pouyanné. CEO Total, Kristin Holth, CEO Ocean, DNB and Yngve Slyngstad, CEO, NBIM.
Today also saw the launch of the Getting to Zero Coalition, a powerful alliance representing senior leaders, including Lloyd’s Register, within the maritime, energy, infrastructure and finance sectors, supported by decision-makers from government and International Government Organisations aiming for shipping’s decarbonisation with the mutual goal of having commercially viable zero emission vessels operating along deep sea trade routes by 2030.
