This report focuses on the final stage of the fuel supply chain - the ship - giving a readiness indication of zero (or near zero) carbon fuel use onboard vessels.

Technology readiness levels (TRL) across all the potential zero carbon fuels in our assessment have advanced considerably over the past year, with a rise in commercial trials and applications. In addition, investment readiness levels (IRL) of these fuels at the “ship” supply chain stage are increasing.

However, IRL at ship stage are still impacted by uncertainties earlier on in the supply chain around future fuel availability and supply infrastructure. Significant challenges also remain for community readiness levels (CRL), as safety risks have yet to be fully mitigated particularly with ammonia, hydrogen and methanol.

This report will give a comprehensive overview of the readiness state of ships in the fuel supply chain, and help stakeholders develop solutions to address the operational cost gap through financing and policy changes.
