LR Approval Marks – Guidelines for Use

The LR Approval Mark is a trusted symbol that demonstrates your certification with Lloyd’s Register. To ensure the mark is used correctly and consistently across all mediums, please follow the guidelines below.

1. About the LR Approval Marks

Lloyd's Register's approval marks are symbols that signify certification of your products, materials, equipment, or services. Displaying an LR Approval Mark demonstrates your commitment to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

The Approval Marks issued by Lloyd’s Register group are authorised for use to promote the products, equipment, or services covered by your approval certificate. This mark is applicable for use on:

  • Stationery
  • Promotional literature
  • Websites
  • Product marking
  • Packaging
  • Casting or stamping work (where relevant)

These marks must be used in accordance with these guidelines for use and any agreed contractual terms and conditions to maintain their credibility and ensure an accurate representation of your certification status.

2. Downloading LR Approval Marks

The official LR Approval Marks are available for download at the bottom of this page. These files are optimised for both print and digital use. For guidance on which format best suits your application, please explore the relevant section below.

3. Using LR Approval Marks in Print Materials

When displaying the LR Approval Mark in print formats, such as brochures, technical documents, or physical marketing materials:

  • Size requirements: The Approval Mark must not be used at a height smaller than 20mm. It can be enlarged as long as the original proportions are maintained.
  • Colour specifications: Reproduction is limited to:
    • Black (Pantone© Black or Process Black)
    • Blue (Pantone© 541)
    • Green (Pantone© 3265U, Pantone© 3265C)
    • White (Pure white / PANTONE 11-0601 TCX)

A white key line ensures visibility against dark backgrounds. For more information on these colours, please refer to our brand guidelines

  • Text alternative for small surfaces: Where the standard mark is impractical (e.g., cables with a printable surface less than 20mm), a text version in Source Sans Pro Semi Bold typeface, no smaller than 10pt, in black or white, should be used.
  • Unique approval numbers: Where necessary, include the unique approval or certificate number below the Approval Mark and service-related information to the right, using either Frutiger or Arial typefaces to maintain a uniform appearance.
  • Print file format: Use the high-resolution EPS format for precise, professional print quality.

Maintain a clear space around the mark equal to at least half the height of the logo.

4. Using LR Approval Marks in digital media

When displaying the LR Approval Mark in digital formats, such as websites, email footers, or social media:

  • Use the PNG format for web use where transparency is required.
  • Use the SVG format for scalable graphics to ensure sharp resolution across screen sizes.
  • Use the JPG format for email footers or situations where a transparent background is unnecessary.

4.1 Resolution and aspect ratio guidance

  • Use high-resolution files to prevent pixelation.
  • Maintain the original aspect ratio (1:1) to prevent distortion.
  • For optimal visibility in digital materials, the LR Approval Mark should be at least 80px wide.

4.2 Accessibility considerations

  • Ensure the mark meets WCAG guidelines for sufficient contrast (a minimum ratio of 4.5:1) to enhance accessibility.
  • Avoid placing the mark on busy or low-contrast backgrounds.

4.3  Digital placement

  • For websites, place the mark in footers, certification pages, or accreditation sections.
  • For email footers, place the mark below or alongside the sender's signature for balance.
  • For social media, ensure the mark follows LR brand guidelines and is not distorted or manipulated.
  • Include a hyperlink within the LR Approval Mark to either LR.org or the LR Approvals Page for added credibility.

5. Prohibited uses

To protect the integrity of the LR Approval Mark, the following actions are strictly prohibited:

  • Distortion or Alteration: The mark must not be stretched, rotated, cropped, or modified in any way.
  • Unapproved Colour Variations: Only approved brand colours may be used. The mark must not be altered with shadows, gradients, or other visual effects.
  • Misleading Placement: The Approval Mark must not be used in any manner that could mislead third parties into believing LR endorses non-approved products, equipment, or services and should not be placed adjacent to third-party advertisements.
  • Illegality: The Approval Mark must not be used in any way that breaches any local, national or international law or regulation or in any way that is unlawful or fraudulent or has any unlawful or fraudulent purpose or effect.
  • Impersonation, partnership or agency: The Approval Mark must not be used in any way which suggests you are Lloyd’s Register, acting on behalf of Lloyd’s Register or that you are a partner or agent of Lloyd’s Register.
  • Information Security: The Approval Mark must not be used in connection with the transmission of any data, or sending or uploading of any material that contains viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time-bombs, keystroke loggers, spyware, adware or any other harmful programs or similar computer code designed to adversely affect the operation of any computer software or hardware.

6. Approval process and compliance

Once your organisation has received approval to use the LR Approval Mark, pre-approval for individual marketing campaigns is not required, except for large-scale use such as national broadcast advertising, international campaigns, or other high-visibility placements. If in doubt, please contact us via our website contact form.

7. Using the Approval Marks in text

In instances where using the graphic mark isn’t possible, organisations may refer to their approval in text format using this text:

  • "[Your Company Name] is approved by Lloyd's Register for [Certification Type] certification by [Standard/Regulation]."

The other provisions of these guidelines continue to apply.

8. Intellectual property

The LR Approval Mark remains the property of Lloyd’s Register and must not be used in a manner that is misleading or otherwise not in accordance with these guidelines.

All registered and unregistered intellectual property rights in the Approval Mark belong to the Lloyd’s Register group, which grants a non-exclusive license for its reproduction in accordance with applicable terms and conditions or otherwise as agreed in writing, provided that adherence to these requirements is maintained. This license is revocable at any time and Lloyd’s Register reserve all rights in respects of its intellectual property.

Your organisation must not do, nor omit to do, nor cause or permit to be done, any act that may adversely affect the value or reputation any of Lloyd’s Register’s intellectual property rights or the goodwill associated with them or that may invalidate or jeopardise any registration of, or application for, any of them.

We encourage organisations to regularly review their certification status to ensure marketing materials reflect current approvals.
