Overview

Marine propulsion systems and technologies are changing and innovating at a fast rate, with economic and environmental considerations at the forefront of this.

This three-day course will give an introduction to some of the main types of hybrid propulsion systems in the marine industry, an understanding of how Lloyd's Register's (LR) design appraisal and survey processes cope with these ever changing demands, and of how these can help you to prepare for surveys leading to increased operational efficiency. The course also recaps  LR's survey requirements for more conventional marine electrical systems as a basis for hybrid designs.

Who will benefit?

The course will benefit the marine engineer or system designer involved with electrical, control and software based systems and equipment in hybrid propulsion systems.

Delegates should possess an appreciation of the fundamentals of electrical and control engineering, and an appreciation of LR's related Rules.

The course aims to provide knowledge of the key aspects of design appraisal and in the survey of hybrid propulsion systems in order to help you identify key design features and considerations and any non-compliances with LR's Rules and Regulations.

The shipping and marine industries are undergoing significant changes and innovation in propulsion methodologies with increasing use of novel electrical and hybrid systems. There is also greater use and reliance on complex computer based systems.

Therefore, it is essential that seagoing and shore-based staff have a good appreciation of such systems, both those in service and those likely to undergo significant development in the future, in order to ensure that they are maintained in an efficient operational and safe condition.
