Overview
This two-day course will develop your understanding of the role and responsibilities of a modern classification society, and its requirements for both Classification and Statutory surveys. It will also help you prepare for scheduled major surveys, leading to increased operational efficiency.

In today’s dynamic yachting industry, where regulatory requirements seem to change on an almost daily basis, sea-going and shore-based staff need up-to-date knowledge of the essential requirements of Classification and Statutory surveys.
This course is designed for all yacht industry personnel, whether on-board or shore-based, wishing to gain, enhance or refresh their knowledge of how classification societies operate, and their relationship with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in applying statutory regulations on behalf of flag Administrations.
Led by experienced Lloyd’s Register surveyors, the course includes case studies, discussion groups and practical exercises, and will help you:
- Understand what classification means and the associated requirements for shipowners, builders and managers
- Appreciate the mechanics of how classification works, plus the roles of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and IMO
- Learn about the requirements of, and how to plan for, periodical and statutory surveys including:
- annual surveys
- docking and in-water surveys (IWS)
- intermediate surveys
- special surveys
- safety equipment surveys
- introduction to ISM and ISPS
- convention (MARPOL) surveys
- Become familiar with the fundamental statutory requirements of:
- Port State Control
- MARPOL 73/78
- Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) plus the International Life-Saving Appliance Code (LSA Code)
- ILO MLC (2006)
- Red Ensign Yacht Code
- Gain confidence when working with port state control, flag Administration and vetting officials.
