Applicability of changes

The revisions include new requirements for the checkpoint regime where defects are identified. These amendments are also particularly relevant to multi-deck vessels, such as:

  • Passenger ships
  • Pure car carriers (PCC)
  • Pure car and truck carriers (PCTC)
  • Ro-ro and ropax vessels
  • Naval NS1 vessels.

Summary of changes

A brief overview of changes is summarised below:

  1. Reduction of checkpoint numbers in certain locations, as described in the Ship and Naval Rules, respectively.
    Note: there are no reductions for areas determined as highly stressed, or identified by SDA, FDA, or critical locations as per the construction monitoring (CM) plan.

  2. Revised requirements for additional checkpoints where planar defects are identified.

  3. Clarification of checkpoint lengths on weld crossover sections.

  4. Requirements for the shipbuilder to monitor NDE results, implement corrective actions for any identified increase in defect rates, and share the reports with the surveyor on a periodic basis.  

What shipbuilders should do now

Be aware of LR’s amended Rules for the NDE checkpoint regime, which come into force on 1 January 2025.
