For over 40 years, LR has worked with Mercy Ships to ensure the safety and quality of hospital ships that provide critical medical services worldwide. The partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration and the immense impact it can have on making the world a safer and more compassionate place.

Mercy Ships is a faith-based international development organisation that deploys hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world, delivering vital, free healthcare to people in desperate need. More than 50% of the world’s population live near the coast, meaning hospital ships are an extremely effective method of reaching those in medical need of surgery. Since 1978, Mercy Ships has provided essential medical services to over 2.84 million people.

LR’s expertise in maritime engineering and safety plays a crucial role in ensuring Mercy Ships’ hospital ships meet the highest safety and quality standards. In addition to helping to engineer hospital ships, the partnership also focuses on the exchange of skills and knowledge. LR provides technical expertise and training to Mercy Ships’ crew members, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to operate the ships safely and effectively.

The culture and values of Lloyd’s Register and Mercy Ships have remarkable similarities and complementary aspects that have manifested in treasured personal friendships across our organizations. In addition, the practical expertise of Lloyd’s Register in shipbuilding and ship operations has made it possible for Mercy Ships to help make building a better future and a safer world a reality in many communities throughout Africa.

Both Lloyd’s Register and Mercy Ships are social purpose organisations focused on delivering measurable outcomes. We have been working together since 1978 and our sponsorship programme ensures that those who support Mercy Ships help vulnerable people in surgical need can readily access the maritime safety training they require
