With attention for action on climate change fully focused on COP27 this November in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, industry expectations are running high.
A revision of the International Maritime Organisation’s Initial Greenhouse Gas Strategy is expected to be considered at a meeting of MEPC 80 scheduled for mid-2023, meaning that MEPC 79 in December will be a forum for member states and others to influence the Initial GHG Strategy.
Consequently, COP27, an ‘implementation’ COP with a focus on finance and resilience, will have a significant bearing on the pace and shape of shipping’s decarbonisation ambitions, with implications for shipping stakeholders across the maritime value chain.
Webinar overview
Immediately after COP27, in partnership with the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, we will convene a conversation with key attendees to get their insights on what happened at COP27 and how this could play out at the IMO GHG negotiations at MEPC 79 and 80 in terms of the level of ambition, 1.5 alignment and interim targets, advancing the mid-term measures package and an equitable transition.
