Course summary

The IMO Decarbonization program focusing on Zero Emissions as well as the European Green Deal have many options. Making a sustainable choice is dependent on many factors in novel technologies without the advantage of previous experience and / or prescriptive regulations.

It provides a starting point to the process of creating and submitting an (innovative) alternative or equivalent design proposal, reviewing proposals received and making a selection based on in-depth research.

Who will benefit

The course is suitable for all stakeholders in ship design, construction and management; e.g. representatives of Ship Designers, Ship Construction and Repair Yards, Original Equipment Manufacturers, Educators, Ship Owners, Managers, NGO’s , Charters and Cargo Owners.

Course duration

Classroom based: 2 days

Virtual class: 3 days (6 hours per day)

Course objectives

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the UN Sustainable Development Goals, IMO GHG Vision and Strategy and the European Green Deal
  • Define and explain the difference between the contemporary and novel available alternative fuels,
  • Compare with conventional fuels - the application, properties and considerations for selection
  • Describe the Risk Based Certification, Equivalents, Alternatives and Exemptions.

Delegates will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Course content

Through workshops facilitated by experienced Lloyd’s Register Specialists and in group discussions the below topics are covered during the course:

  • Regulatory framework (existent International initiatives, Rules etc)
  • Conventional fuels- the application, properties and considerations for selection
  • Alternative fuels- the application, properties and considerations for selection -Age of fleet, conversion, lifetime extension, ship types and their trading patterns, availability and the supply chain, future legislation and drivers stakeholders, safety and operational considerations.
  • Introduction to Risk based design process
  • Alternative fueled projects- existing ships
