Headquartered in London, with representative offices in Mumbai, Shanghai and Tokyo, Zodiac Maritime specialises in the management of VLOCs, Capesize, Panamax, Handymax and Handysize bulk carriers, container ships, a range of tankers and pure car (truck) carriers.

Zodiac Maritime has been an early champion of corporate social responsibility, with transparent policies focused on improving environmental and safety performance. We have been proud to have supported the company at every step of the way.

Choosing verification from the start

Zodiac Maritime opted from the outset for external, independent verification of its first report, published in 2011. While this was the first time our client had put this information out for public scrutiny, performance data produced by its environmental, quality and health and safety management systems had been feeding into internal reporting processes for some years, helping inform and shape management decision-making.

Changing market conditions, the recent focus on transparency and increasing public scrutiny prompted our client to be one of the first in its sector to formalise its reporting process and publish CSR data, while also seeking external assurance.

How we helped

Following our recommendations, the scope of Zodiac Maritime’s reporting has broadened year on year. An initial focus on environmental matters has widened to embrace topics such as fleet safety, crew well-being, sustainability and having a robust data management system in place.

We also advised Zodiac Maritime to formalise its materiality process. “We began with formally documenting our awareness of topical issues, regulatory and policy discussions and participation in industry events,” explains Stephanie Moffatt, Environmental Executive at Zodiac Maritime. “This process helps provide us with the evidence base so that we can make informed decisions on what content to include.”

Our ongoing support over several years has helped ensure that Zodiac Maritime’s content remains topical, appropriate and relevant to stakeholders and the industry, and that the business stays ahead of the curve.

Having our first environmental report externally verified was a very useful process. The benefits from choosing independent verification have outweighed...

A long-term relationship

Zodiac Maritime has used our services for many years to certify its management systems.

The ship manager became one of the first in the sector to gain certification to the EMS standard, ISO 14001 in 2001, which it integrated with the ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification in 1996. Our client has also gained certification for OHSAS 18001, helping to improve occupational health and safety. It is working on ISO 50001 certification to support energy efficiency improvements onboard vessels.

Data from our client’s certified, integrated management system has helped inform management decisions, with much of the information and insights gathered being included in corporate reports.

Our relationship with Zodiac Maritime goes further. The ship manager also uses our classification services. Lloyd’s Register currently class over 60% of the existing Zodiac Maritime fleet. Going forward, we’re working with Zodiac Maritime on a number of technology and operational efficiency projects.

The combination of organisation, industry and systems knowledge has proved valuable for our client’s corporate responsibility policies and reporting. It allows us to provide Zodiac Maritime with significant added value in terms of existing knowledge, relating recommendations directly to business processes. By verifying data and integrating relevant activities, we’ve also helped introduce efficiencies when assessing our client’s management systems.

Business benefits

Corporate report verification provides important independent assurance on issues that are relevant to marine sector stakeholders. This is at a time when the industry itself is coming under close scrutiny for its environmental and sustainability issues. Zodiac Maritime benefits from both choosing to report, and having its reports, verified. It is a decision that has been well received by clients, employees and other stakeholders.

One important part of the sustainability agenda is transparency throughout our activities. We know from meetings with our key customers
