WHISPER – Wind Energy Harvesting for Ship Propulsion Assistance and Power.

Scope:

The WHISPER project with an overall budget of 9.19 M€ over 4 years aims to prove the technical and economic viability and promote wider adoption of large-scale power generation and propulsion assistance systems on-board energy harvesting of wind and solar.

WHISPER aims to develop and demonstrate a fully modular retrofit solution comprising a combined Wind-Solar Hybrid Power System (WSHPS) and a Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) as shown below.

Project objectives

WHISPER project is composed of the following 8 Work Packages (WP):

WP1 Systems Design and Simulation (VER)
WP2 Manufacturing and Testing  (CAN)
WP3 Container Ship Trial (SAM)
WP4 Bulk Carrier Trial (ANT)
WP5 Performance Analysis and New Purpose-Built Designs (SDI)
WP6 Cross Cutting Activities (VER)
WP7 Exploitation, Communication and Dissemination (ATH)
WP8 Project Management and Coordination (VER)

LR's role and motivation
Lloyd's Register contributes to WP1, WP2 and WP6 aimimg to develop / update procedures on Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) installation (NewConstruct and Retrofit)-STAT (COLREG, SOLAS) and Safety and other considerations.
