Case Study: Taking Environmental Reporting Further for the Cargo Industry.

Modern cargo owners need relevant, complete, consistent, accurate and transparent data and information on their logistics. This is in response to increasing pressure not only from customers, but also investors, regulators and other stakeholders. Consequently, cargo carriers including our client, OOCL, must report their CO2 and SOx emissions data, as verified by a third-party expert. Such data helps cargo owners demonstrate sound environmental performance, and independent, third-party assurance is an important part of credible data disclosure. OOCL was keen to lead the way in this important area.

OOCL selected Lloyd’s Register, as a first-class environmental verifier, to further bolster its corporate reputation. Our role included developing a tailored assurance solution, based on reporting to the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG), led by the Business for Social Responsibility (BSR). This approach enabled our client to provide all the necessary data and information, as well as going beyond industry requirements: demonstrating how the company was reducing its own environmental impacts. 

For our client’s fleet of over 95 vessels, both in-house vessels and ships chartered on the spot, we provided limited assurance of the:

• CO2 and SOx data submitted to the CCWG
• annual total direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 11) of in-house and chartered container vessels operated by OOCL.

This was the third consecutive year that OOCL completed environmental verification using the CCWG standard. By extending the scope to include the ISO standard for greenhouse gas, we helped our client demonstrate its long-term commitment to:
