Are the Life-Saving Appliances on board and up to date? Is the firefighting equipment in good working order and fit for purpose? Have I got the appropriate measures in place to prevent marine pollution? Are the appropriate crew agreements in place? Just a few issues that have to be considered prior and during the operation of a yacht.
The activities in the yacht industry is moving towards its peak, particularly in the Mediterranean where the chartering season is about to start. Owners and guests will be exposed to an unforgettable experience, visiting unique destinations in absolute luxury. This must not be interrupted by preventable miscalculations or inadequate preparedness. One of the foundations of a successful experience is the safety and quality of the yacht and its crew. Disregarding this vital aspect in favour of the entertainment could lead to delays, detentions in case of port state control (PSC) inspections or even worse, accidents.
In an effort to assist the industry, LR and the UK P&I Club have released a Life-Saving Appliances pocket checklist app to help ensure that ship personnel are trained in how to inspect, maintain and operate life-saving equipment, and that equipment is ready for use at all times. The app also includes a list of common deficiencies to help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and help reduce the risk of PSC detentions.
The full series of six pocket checklist apps, consisting of: ILO MLC, ISM & ISPS, Marine Fire Safety, Marine Pollution Prevention Port State Inspections, and now Life-Saving Appliances, are all available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The five existing apps have been well received by the marine industry worldwide and the ILO MLC and ISM & ISPS pocket checklists apps also featured in Marine Insight’s list of top 10 mobile apps for seafarers.
The apps include functionality that enable ships’ crews and their managers to easily view necessary legislative and regulatory requirements, save multiple checklists, check off completed activities, add essential notes/images and send completed checklists via email.
Engel-Jan de Boer, LR’s Yacht Segment Manager, said: "This series of apps has been tremendously successful and helps to reinforce LR as the premier class society in the yacht industry. LR’s aspiration is to continue to provide software solutions such as the apps, helping to ensure compliance with the latest regulations. My advice is simple, use the apps."
The iOS apps can be downloaded from the App Store here.
The android apps can be downloaded from the Google Play Store here.
