Yan Fen’s entry into the maritime industry was not the result of a planned career choice but rather a practical decision made at a pivotal moment. With an engineering degree from Changshu University of Science and Technology, she embarked on a journey into maritime, first working as a designer in a shipyard before stepping into supervisory roles.
“There were challenges at the beginning. When I first went onboard, I felt scared and lost, but it was also awe-inspiring” Yan Fen admits. Comprehensive training at LR played a crucial role in her professional development. The rigorous training program sharpened her technical skills and instilled the confidence needed to thrive in a demanding maritime environment.
In a field where she remains the only permanent female surveyor in her team, Yan Fen has consistently proven her determination to succeed. “As a woman, I often need to work harder,” she explains.
Her role involves more than technical proficiency – it requires physical endurance from climbing ladders and conducting inspections in challenging conditions to persevering through cyclical routines. Yan Fen stressed the importance of a positive mental to help deal with these hurdles, “in those moments, I choose to adjust myself – to be happy, to be positive, and to focus on the good.”
Supportive colleagues and a nurturing company culture at LR have made all the difference. Whether it’s adapting personal protective equipment (PPE) to better suit her needs or receiving understanding during family challenges, the support system at LR has been vital. “My colleagues always show respect and support. They believe in me because I work hard,” she says.
For young women considering maritime engineering, Yan Fen serves as the perfect role model. “I would love to recommend this kind of job to young women,” she shares. Her advice is straightforward: embrace challenges, stay resilient, and commit to lifelong learning. “I feel very proud as a woman to be a surveyor in this big family.”
Despite the demanding nature of her role, which requires both mental and physical strength, Yan Fen considers the personal growth and empowerment that come with her work to be rewarding in their own right. Navigating a traditionally male-dominated field hasn't been without its challenges, but it has also allowed her to develop as both a professional and a person. Her experiences reflect the potential for greater inclusivity in the maritime industry.
