The Committee also completed Phase 1 of short-term GHG measures by agreeing on CII reduction factors through to 2030, and approved enhanced fuel oil data reporting regulations to support greater transparency.
Further progress was made on technical and safety standards, with amendments adopted to the NOx Technical Code 2008 and the 2023 Guidelines for developing the Inventory of Hazardous Materials. In addition, MEPC 83 agreed to implement an Experience Building Phase for the Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling and initiated the development of a legally binding framework to manage biofouling, aiming to curb the spread of invasive aquatic species.
