Expertise in Naval Ship and Submarine Classification
As the world's leading classification society for naval surface ships, Lloyd's Register (LR) has more than 250 years of experience in marine design and surveying. We publish and implement requirements for all types of surface vessels, from offshore patrol vessels to aircraft carriers.
This extensive background in naval technology also allows us to apply our expertise to naval submarines, providing comprehensive assurance for these highly complex assets.
The Naval Submarine Code
A key recent development for naval submarine design and assessment is the Naval Submarine Code. LR was a primary developer of this Code and continues to provide secretariat services to the International Naval Safety Association (INSA) for its ongoing development. This deep involvement means we offer unparalleled expertise in the Code's technical content and intent. We believe the Code provides the first truly holistic and goal-based approach for assessing submarine designs, and we're already helping clients—including navies, designers, operators, and builders—use it to prove that new and existing submarines meet their functional objectives and performance requirements. Additionally, we're developing the necessary technical documents and specifications to support the Code's goal-based framework, helping clients assess and update existing standards or create new ones.
