This course provides a foundational understanding of the inservice Grey Boat Code survey requirements for naval craft, covering annual, intermediate, and renewal examinations. It is particularly targeted at the Annual ‘self’ examinations by the
Owner which may be undertaken by a ‘suitable person’ for certain types of boat service categories, with the approval of the Naval Administration.

Through practical exercises, discussions, and real-world scenarios, attendees will develop the knowledge and confidence to interpret Code requirements and apply them effectively within their operational roles.

You will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Classroom based: 3 days

This course combines two days of interactive classroom learning with one day of practical survey activities.

  • An introduction to the Grey Boat Code
  • The survey cycle and various responsibilities
  • Documentation – Survey reports and supporting documents
  • The scope of the periodical examinations and typical issues that arise
  • Discussion of any emerging issues
  • A practical day surveying boats in small groups to gain an understanding of the process from the surveyor’s point of view. We would aim to have to have a variety of craft to work where possible
  • Discussion on outcomes of your survey findings 
  • Reporting and Certification
  • Recording inspections and handling deficiencies
  • Damage and repairs – Reporting, recording and responsibilities

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of the Code and how it is applied.
  • Understand what scope there is for the administration to undertake some of the annual surveys
  • Through practical exercises gain a hand on experience of application of the code to available boats on site.
  • Appreciate many of the typical issues faced by surveyors and the need for a pragmatic interpretation of the code requirements.
