This course focuses on a practical approach for understanding the requirements and the implementation process related to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW) as amended in 2010.
In attending this course will help you play an important role in ensuring that the requirements of the STCW Convention are satisfied prior and during the employment of every Seafarer on board the company’s vessels.
This course is provided in co-operation with Cosmos Nautical Training Centre.
You will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

This course is of value to shipping company personnel involved in manning & crew departments, superintendents and auditors, as well as everyone else whose duties involve the monitoring, verification and implementation of the provisions of the STCW Convention or who may want to gain or further enhance their knowledge and understanding of the Convention.
Course objectives
By the end of this course delegates will be able to:
- Gain knowledge of the responsibilities of the Company and the Flag State as mandated by the STCW Convention
- Be able to understand and update a Training and Certification matrix and monitor compliance with it in accordance with the STCW Convention
- Be able to check the validity of certificates of competency and proficiency in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Convention
- Be able to monitor the manning of the vessels with appropriately certificated crew members
- Gain knowledge and understanding of the minimum safe manning requirements of the Administration and their implications with the STCW Convention
- Be able to monitor compliance with the STCW Convention, and the effective dates of the 2010 Manila amendments
- Gain knowledge and understanding of the minimum rest hours requirements of the Convention and their application on board
- Be able to monitor the process for the amendments of the Convention and their implementation
- Appreciate the relationship between the Convention and Port State Control inspections

Through a highly participative combination of presentations, discussions, case studies plus exercises, you will learn about and understand:
- The structure of the STCW Convention
- The principal requirements of the STCW Convention
- Certificates revalidation requirements
- The minimum safe manning requirements and related flag state requirements
- The obligations of the company and watch-keeping provisions, including minimum rest hours provisions
- The principal steps for completing the transition to the STCW Convention as amended in 2010.
