EEXI - ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXISTING SHIP INDEX

On 17 June 2021, the IMO adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI at MEPC 76, introducing regulations 23 and 25 - the Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and regulation 28 - the requirement to reduce Operational Carbon Intensity through the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

Vessels impacted by EEXI must demonstrate compliance by their next survey – annual, intermediate or renewal – for the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate (IAPPC), or the initial survey before the ship enters service for the International Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC) to be issued, whichever is the first on or after 1 January 2023 (Note: it is the actual survey date and not the survey due date that triggers compliance). Entry into force was on 1 November 2022.

Your immediate focus should therefore be on completing your EEXI and improvement calculations, if you haven’t done so already. 

Some shipowners are yet to commence the process and in some cases may not be fully aware of the implications for their fleet or the reasons for moving quickly. There is opportunity to get ahead of the game and prepare for a future of sustainability. 

Timeframes are short. There are several steps you may need to complete to achieve compliance. Act quickly to avoid the risk of your ships being unable to trade internationally.
