Assurance for smaller crewed vessels
Boats under 24 metres face a distinct set of operational and assurance challenges. While small in size, they are often expected to deliver high performance in demanding conditions, undertaking tasks such as force protection, boarding operations, personnel transfer, search and rescue, training and patrol. Frequent launching and recovery, high-speed operation, exposure to severe slamming loads and intensive utilisation can place significant demands on hull structures, machinery and safety equipment. Their comparatively small size also means limited redundancy, making equipment reliability and compliance with the applicable code critical to safe operation.
Manned boats under 24 metres must meet the relevant commercial or Government code before entering service and remain compliant throughout their operational life. Achieving and maintaining certification requires independent assessment against the nominated code.
How LR helps
LR provides certification and survey services for these vessels, supporting compliance from newbuild through to in-service operation. Working with a wide range of industry-recognised codes, we provide plan approval, technical review, onboard surveys and certification to verify compliance throughout the vessel lifecycle.
Developed specifically for government-operated boats, the LR Grey Boat Code recognises that defence and coastguard craft may operate differently from commercial vessels. The Code provides a framework for maintaining appropriate safety standards while ensuring these craft are still able to carry out their unique roles.
We also provide through-life survey support to manned boats under 24 metres in accordance with the code applicable to the vessel. Periodic surveys verify continued compliance throughout the vessel's operational life, helping operators manage the effects of intensive use, ageing equipment and changing operational requirements while maintaining certification.
