Significant outcomes from MEPC 83: 

Below is a brief overview of some of the significant outcomes from MEPC 83:

  1. Approval of Mid-term GHG reduction measures as amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, expected to be adopted at the Extraordinary Session of MEPC in October 2025 for entry into force 1 March 2027.​​​​​​

  2. Completion of Phase 1 of the Short-term GHG reduction measures by agreeing reduction factors for CII through to 2030.

  3. Approval of regulations to increase data transparency related to fuel oil reporting.

  4. ​​​​​Adoption of Amendments to the NOx Technical Code 2008 related to substantial modification of a marine diesel engine and engines using multiple operational profiles​​​.​​

  5. Adoption of Amendments to the 2023 Guidelines for the development of the Inventory of Hazardous Materials.

  6. Agreement to have an Experience Building Phase for the Hong Kong Convention on the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships.

  7. Agreement to develop a new legally binding framework for the control and management of ships’ biofouling to minimise the transfer of invasive aquatic species.
