LR Advisory’s ESG MEMI Industry Benchmark Report presents the results of applying this pioneering tool across a broad and representative cross-section of the global shipping industry, giving the sector an authoritative picture of where it stands, and a structured path to improvement.
In this 1st edition, the report sees the benchmark applied to 48 global shipping companies across six sub-sectors, the MEMI evaluates performance across five weighted pillars using a validated 59-question framework. The report’s findings reveal an industry that has broadly built the architecture of ESG governance, but operational environmental performance, supply chain transparency and maritime-specific criteria consistently lag behind, even among the highest-scoring companies.
The index places the industry at a mean score of 56 out of 100, in the lower Advanced band, with individual company scores ranging from 2.9 to 95.9, a spread that reflects the substantial gap between leaders and the rest of the sector. Illustrated with five case studies drawn from real LR Advisory engagements, this report is an essential resource for shipowners, operators and financiers who need to know how they compare and where best to focus their ESG efforts.
