Methane Emissions Reduction: MAMII initiative
Lloyd's Register is a key participant in the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII), bringing together fourteen member organisations in a collaborative effort. Led by Safetytech Accelerator and chaired by LR's Global Gas Director, Panos Mitrou, MAMII aims to minimise methane emissions from LNG-fueled ships.
While LNG offers advantages over traditional fuels in terms of CO₂ and other pollutants, unburned methane slip can negate these benefits due to methane's high global warming potential. MAMII is working to identify and accelerate technological solutions for measuring and managing methane emissions across the LNG value chain, from well to ship.
Crucially, MAMII's released report emphasises the urgent need for universal standards for measuring methane emissions from ships. The report highlights the current regulatory void and calls for globally standardised measurement frameworks and technology-centric regulations that incentivise the development and adoption of methane abatement technologies. This standardisation is crucial for driving progress in reducing methane slip, which can significantly impact the overall GHG benefit of LNG as a transition fuel.
