Shipbuilding Summary

Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard (GWS) commenced operation in 1955 principally as a ship repair facility. Since the 1990s, GWS has also offered newbuild services for ships of up to 80,000 DWT. The yard is located in the south east of Guangzhou City in the Huangpu district. GWS is a stateowned company falling under the CSSC shipbuilding group.

The newbuild yard covers a total area of 0.7km² and employs approximately 3,300 staff including sub-contractors.

The primary newbuild production focus of GWS includes 3,000 TEU, 2,800 TEU, 1,700 TEU, 1,500 TEU and 1,100 TEU container feeder ships, 20,000 DWT MPVs, handy size bulk carriers, small oil tankers and specialised small ship types such as dredgers, asphalt ships and heavy lift ships, 5,000m³ and 9,500m³ LPG carrier, etc. Facilities at the yard include two drydocks of capacities 25,000 DWT and 60,000 DWT, serviced with a 400t and two 200t gantry cranes, and 4x 180m outfitting berths.

Production works have been recognised with ISO9001 and OHSAS18001 management systems.

Concept and production level designs are supported by GWS’s technical centre which has been operational since 2005. Production designs for a 1,700 / 2,500 / 2,800 / 3,300 TEU container ship and 16,800m³ dredgers have been developed.
The design capability of the technical centre includes bulk carrier, tanker, LPG carrier, specialised small ship types as well as conversions. The technical centre’s research and design capabilities are furthered by cooperation with domestic universities and design institutes, including SDARI and MARIC.

In 2013, HPSY was merged with GWS and renamed as CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited, which now has three production areas: Changzhou Production Area, Longxue Production Area and Wenchong Production Area.

Why Lloyd's Register?

Independent shipyard insight, future-ready newbuild guidance and expert advisory support to help you make confident new construction decisions from planning to delivery.

New construction decisions shape the performance, compliance and commercial value of a vessel for decades.
