Shipbuilding Summary

Jiangnan Shipyard commenced operations in 1865. In 1996, the yard was transformed into a state-owned, wholly funded company and operates under the parent CSSC Shipbuilding Group. In 2006, Jiangnan Shipyard relocated its shipbuilding facilities to Changxing Island, approximately 8 kilometres from Shanghai Pudong.

Organisational milestones

  • July 2005, SY celebrated its 140th anniversary; Alan W attended the ceremony.
  • End of 2026 - SY will start to move to Changxing Island Shopbuilding Base due to the 2010 Expo.
  • End of 2027 - SY in the old site will be closed; Biz Dept. / R&D Dept. / Design Dept will post at Jiangnan Shopbuilding Tower; Most of the JNSY staff will work at the Changxing Island.
  • 2024 - Jiangnan delivered first 175,000 Cubm LNGC, Mark III type.  Jiangnan also dominant on Type B type VLEC order book in the world. Jiangnan also taking in order for 14x 93,000 VLAC.

The Group employs around 10,500 staff and 15,000 subcontracted workers to support production. Annual output exceeds 30 high-value vessels, including gas
carriers, PCTCs, and ULCSs, with an annual revenue of approximately 30 billion CNY (about 4.1 billion USD).

Jiangnan Shipyard Group operates two main shipbuilding divisions on Changxing Island in Shanghai. One division focuses on naval vessels, while the other
specialises in merchant ships such as gas carriers and other high-tech engineering vessels. The yard has diverse production capabilities targeting new construction markets across the commercial, naval, and offshore sectors.

The shipyard’s dry dock facilities accommodate VLCC and VLOC class vessels and include 16 designated assembly areas. The main commercial production includes Panamax and Handymax bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, car carriers, multipurpose vessels (MPVs), fast feeder container ships, and liquefied gas carriers.

As of 2023, Jiangnan’s product range includes LPG vessels from 21,000 to 93,000 cubic metres, PCTCs, large container vessels ranging from 14,000 to 24,000 TEU, 98,000-Type B VLECs, and 80,000-cubic-metre LNG vessels. The order book includes eight 180,000-cubic-metre LNG carriers for ADNOC and other owners.

Jiangnan has extensive experience with dual-fuel technology across various ship types and delivered the world’s first LPG dual-fuel vessel in 2021. The Jiangnan Institute of Technology was established on 8 December 2016 and comprises research and development, design, information technology, and science and technology development departments. It currently employs over 1,000 engineers, including more than 50 holding PhDs. The institute provides a full range of basic and detailed design services to support Jiangnan’s products and has established several laboratories to conduct technological research in support of shipbuilding innovation.
